Gutsy Dixons.co.uk advertising

The first time I saw the new adverts for Dixons.co.uk was on my way back from Gatwick, and even half-asleep after a overnight flight, I couldn’t help but notice them.

For those that haven’t seen the new ads, they talk humourously and tongue-in-cheek about an offline competitor (the first I saw was Harrods, and now there are ads featuring Selfridges and John Lewis too), and suggests “then go to dixons.co.uk and buy it”. This is something savvy consumers have known for a while – browse offline, get some good advice from the more knowledgeable staff in the large department stores, then hit the internet for the best price. Email marketing – what would you read?

Email marketing is big business. It is the quickest, easiest and cheapest way of reaching your customers. You can direct them to your site, advertise the latest news, let them know of offers and much more. But it can all go very wrong. You have to ask yourself; would you read what you are sending out?

Email marketing can be very powerful, but only if used properly. I have seen some emails come through, where the writer has clearly got excited and you are left with no idea where to start, and a page so long you can’t be bothered to read it. Read more

Work placements, what are they?

Everybody asks me what it’s all about when I tell them that I work for Naked Creativity on placement. Usually I don’t have time to say more than a few words, so this article explains placements in detail, and how it benefits everyone to have a placement student around.

At Brunel, where I will be returning in September, you have the option in the design department to do your degree ’straight through’ in three years, or take your third year out and do a placement with a company, or spend a year studying at a partner university (San Francisco is a popular option). Then back for the fourth and final year. Read more

What’s the point?

Thanks to the BBC we discovered today that PowerPoint is 25 years old today.

Fortunately, we don’t have to sit through many draining presentations in our line of work, but we do get asked to design presentations and templates from time to time. We also make the occasional presentation ourselves, either to a client, or to an audience, such as recently when I spoke at Brunel University about setting up your own business after graduating.

The article and comments on the BBC website are well worth a read, especially if you are guilty or stuffing slides with too much information. In all the presentations we’ve been asked to design we use imagery to explain the key information one point at a time. After all the software is called PowerPoint, not PowerPoints!

So, our top tip for a successful presentation? Use a stock image library to source quality images which illustrate your point. (iStockPhoto is an excellent resource, and for free images you can’t beat StockXchng). Overlay this with one clear point, such as an important increase, decrease or percentage. Your audience won’t be distracted and will absorb the rest of the information from what you say.
