Industrial Design Consultancy Website redesign and LCA calculator

Brief

To develop an online life cycle analysis calculator and completely overhaul the company website.

IDC's website did not represent their position as one of the longest established product design consultancies in the UK. They also wanted to develop a tool that would position IDC as one of the leading sustainable design consultancies – a company that you could turn to develop a more environmentally-friendly product.

We delivered

In order to build recognition of IDC as a sustainable design consultancy, we developed an online Life Cycle Assessment tool. This analyses the environmental impact of a product, from manufacture, transport, use and eventual disposal. All of the calculations are then worked out and the energy used in each phase reported numerically and in graph form. Recommendations are also given as to effective steps that could be taken to reduce the impact.

Combined with effective PR, the tool was picked up by a number of design blogs, and as a result had a large number of visitors, and completed calculations, in the first month. As a result, the tool has had an ongoing number of referral visits to the main IDC website.

On the IDC site we have delivered a well-optimised site which is easy for the IDC team to populate with new articles and case studies. As a result, and a consistent PR effort, the website now massively outperforms the old site, with the number of visitors in April 2009 up 363% on the same period in 2008.

Visitors that found the IDC site through natural search increased by 425% year-on-year, with traffic from natural search arriving to pages throughout the site. The number of pages on the IDC website which were visited directly from search results increased 444% from April 2008 to April 2009.
